		African Man, original watercolor painting by Li Jin Ming (1967) 非洲青年水粉 Li says that his teacher, Xu Jian Bai, taught that making the eyes of a subject, showing emotion, was of utmost importance in portraiture. That is part of what Xu's mentor, Lin Feng Mian, taught her. Even in this early work, Li shows that he was a good student. This is a very nice early portrait by Li, especially since the medium is watercolor. The colors are very nice and soft, and the subject is not what you might expect from a Chinese artist, in the 1960's when China was closed off from the world. Today, Li is a great portrait painter. 	756.	Citizen Series number 1, original oil painting by Tang Hai Guo The future of humankind. As people become less and less active, sitting at their jobs, sitting at home watching TV, driving their cars down the block to get a quart of milk, their bodies may someday shrink, being left with massive heads in relation to their bodies. It actually reminds me of the costumes with big heads that are popular at Carnival Time, in European and South American countries. We particularly like this figurative portrait by Tang. It's a fun painting, and the high heels and basketball add nice touches. The light blues are cheery. 		The Natural Number 20082868, original mixed media on canvas by Zhang Zhen Jiang (2009) Sometime, somewhere, someone and something, in a certain setting, everything was so uncertain. Little A stood there, tall and upright and burning with desire. She closed her eyes and wrote down the number 20082868, spontaneously. It seemed whimsical, at first, yet complicated, in reality. 	699.	White Cloud: original oil painting on canvas by Zhao Qian Xu (1998) This painting of an older Yao minority man and young boy is from a series of paintings that Xu did in Lianzhou, in the north of Guangdong. Zhao Qian Xu has a breadth of style that stretches from the very precise, realistic to the abstract. In fact, he says that he enjoys painting in more abstract, less realistic styles because it allows him more freedom to create. We tend to like his abstract works, as well as the realistic, and everything in between. This painting is slightly on the impressionistic side of realism with bold brushstrokes making up the faces, defining the old man's high cheekbones, yet, more delicate strokes show individual hairs of the old man's beard and crows feet around his eyes. Moreover, paintings of the minorities people of China show the real China, as those of us who live here know it, as opposed to the China that China presents to the world. In the minorities, age-old traditions are still preserved, unlike the mainstream traditions, which were lost in the cultural revolution. The people are unassuming and live simple existences, even wearing traditional dress passed down through the ages. We believe that paintings that chronicle their lives for us to share are most precious.
