Rapids: Xiang Xiu style Chinese hand-embroidered landscape It is just amazing that such a scene can be captured in embroidery. The rough boulders are done so well in chiaroscuro. As the water comes down the little fall, in the background, and churns around the boulders, tiny licks of water can be seen departing from the mainstream, spraying into the air. The tree line with its play of light and shadow and sky with puffy clouds, in the background, bring our eye to the center of the peaceful center of the pool where we can see reflections of the surroundings, in the water, so well represented in this medium. The scene conveys turbulence and tranquility, all at once. It comes framed and mounted 62 x 52 cm. Hometown Bridge: original oil painting on canvas by Guang Zhi Zhang (1998) Guang Zhi Zhang, trained in trompe l'oeil by Claud Yvel, has a style that varies from very realistic to impressionistic, like this painting from the 1990's. In this oil painting of a bridge, a stream, and a few buildings, he demonstrates his mastery of brushwork in the simple, impasto brushstrokes that create those images in this impressionistic style work. The rich muted brown and gold colors of the bridge, the buildings, and the river bank are even more inviting when finished off with the bright blues and greens of the sky, the water and the grasses. It is a truly wonderful painting that has the feel of one done by Van Gogh. It measures 35 cm by 27 cm. The price does not include framing. We offer several works by Guang Zhi Zhang (Zhang Guang Zhi), in the Leona Craig Art Gallery on-line. To see them all, just click on: Guang Zhi Zhang Page |

The Teen Years: original oil painting on canvas by Xu Zhao Qian (2005) The teen years are when girls blossom, mirrored by the blossoming flowers, in the background of this portrait of a teenage girl. Barefoot and innocent, she is lost in the soulful contemplation, which many teens go through, hugging herself for security, as she blossoms into a young woman. Indeed, there is much melodrama from teenage girls, in China, and most of the rock 'n roll songs are sad songs about breakups. Xu went through a period where he painted many still life paintings of flowers, but this one uses the flowers for a background, and symbolism, in a painting that is full of life and emotion. Folk Art Two Panel: Xiang Xiu hand embroidered folk landscapes This is another very cute folk art set with two larger folk scenes instead of the four smaller ones, like in some of the others that we offer. The first panel is a home garden scene. A father and son are at the entrance of the garden, which has some dogs, chickens, fruit trees, and potted plants. The house with its typical Chinese-style roof is in the background, with some birds in flight over it. The bottom panel depicts a wedding celebration with the bride and groom, in the center of the scene. Onlookers are blowing horns and setting off firecrackers, a part of many Chinese celebrations. A horse-drawn carriage with the Chinese characters for "double happiness", the traditional wish for newly weds, waits to take them home for their wedding night. They are done in the so-called Xiang Xiu style of Chinese embroidery. Framed and matted under glass, 36.5 x 36.5 cm.
